July 2, 2019: The Orion program achieved another milestone with the successful launch of its ascent abort system. This abort system is crucial to the success of the newly-named Artemis program, as it protects the astronauts and carries them away from the launch vehicle if complications arise. Odyssey’s contribution to the mission includes generating range safety data products and validation of the abort motor and attitude control motor models. The next big test flight for the Orion program is Artemis 1, an uncrewed flight that will take Orion around the Moon before returning to Earth, set to launch in late 2020 or early 2021.
